Mock GMP Inspection: What, Why and How?

A mock GMP inspection is an internal assessment that simulates an authority or customer inspection under conditions as close to reality as possible. The aim is less about collecting findings and more about seeing how the system and the team perform under pressure.

When should it be done?

The ideal timing is 2–3 months before the expected inspection. This leaves enough time to plan CAPAs for the findings and close critical topics.

Components of an effective mock audit

• Independent auditors: people with an inspector's perspective who are independent of the team that built the system.
• Realistic scope: areas the authority is likely to focus on — previous inspection findings, new products, major changes.
• Front room / back room set-up: testing how document requests are handled, response times and communication.
• Site tour and interviews: operators being able to explain their own processes, consistently with the records.
• Classified report: findings classified as critical, major and minor, with justification.

Common mistakes

Running the mock audit as a "friendly walk-through", softening findings or focusing only on documents while neglecting the floor leads to surprises in the real inspection. Failing to follow up CAPAs after the mock audit greatly reduces the value of the exercise.
